Highland cattle, affectionately called “hairy coos,” have called the Scottish Highlands home for centuries. Their long, shaggy coats, sweeping horns, and calm demeanor make them one of the most recognizable and beloved cattle breeds in the world.
Quick Facts
- Origin: Scottish Highlands and Western Isles — one of the oldest registered breeds.
- Coat: Double-layered for protection against wind, rain, and cold. Colors include red, black, yellow, dun, and white.
- Horns: Present on both bulls and cows; used for foraging and defense.
- Hardiness: Thrive on poor pasture and in mountainous terrain with little supplemental feed.
- Meat: Lean, well-marbled, and flavorful — prized by chefs and ranchers alike.
In the North Georgia mountains around Ellijay and Gilmer County, Highland cattle fit right in. Their ability to graze rough land and their photogenic appearance make them perfect for local farms and agritourism. Every other month we’ll share more facts, history, and news about these mountain icons.
